Center for Teaching and Learning

The University of Virginia Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) focuses on the quality of teaching and progress of students' learning in schools across America.

CASTL’s aim is to improve educational outcomes through the em-pirical study of teaching, teacher quality, and classroom experi-ence from preschool through high school. The Centre particularly emphasises the challenges posed by poverty, social or cultural isolation, or lack of community resources.

By integrating University initiatives in the Curry School of Edu-cation and the College of Arts and Sciences, CASTL is an inter-disciplinary mechanism for advancing scientifically-based policy and practice in teacher education, student learning, and the quality of classroom teaching.

The Centre is working to ensure that all children in schools and classrooms across the country have access to high-quality teach-ing and learning experiences.

CASTL is engaged in programs of research evaluating the quality of teacher education, support of teachers, classroom conditions and integration of teachers' knowledge.
